Proper nutrition can boost employee health

Today, good nutrition is more important than ever. At least four of the 10 leading causes of death in the United States—heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes—are directly related to what we eat. Diet is also implicated in scores of other conditions. But while the wrong diet can be deadly, eating right is among the cornerstones of good health. Here are some reminders about the basics of good nutrition.

The keys to good nutrition

Balance, variety, and moderation say it all. People can stay healthy by eating the right balance of carbohydrates, fats, and protein—the three main components of nutrition. Vitamins, minerals, and other substances from different foods are also vitally important.

Everything in moderation

Moderation means eating neither too much nor too little of any food or nutrient. Too much food can result in excess weight, while eating too little can lead to numerous nutrient deficiencies and low body mass.

Good nutrition should be part of a lifestyle that also includes:

  • Regular exercise

  • No smoking

  • Refraining from drinking excessively

  • Stress management
